Spring is around the corner!!
Have you booked spring or summer pictures and not sure what you are going to wear for your portraits? I’m going to share some tips on what to wear for spring family pictures.
#1 Pick two or three main colors that you love!
I like to tell my clients to start with one piece of clothing that they love that has a few options for color choices and build off that. Check out my girl Allesha here. She choice this beautiful gray floral shirt for her, and then chose pieces that went well for her menfolk. Also, keep in mind the season that you’re in. You don’t want dark, moody colors for spring and summer. Same goes for fall and winter.
Tip #2 Limit Matching Patterns/Outfits
It’s ok for some members of your family to have similar patterns in your outfits, but for the love of all things holy, please, please, do not chose all plaid for your entire family. If you want to add pattern to your portraits, which I highly suggest you do, maybe limit it to one or two members of your family and the rest of your family be in solids.
Tip #3 Texture
Think of creative ways to pull in the colors that you select. For boys you can use suspenders, ties, bow-ties, hats, or solid color shirts. For girls, you can sprinkle in some headbands, necklaces, cardigans, and scarfs. Layer your son with a t-shirt and a denim button down over it, your daughter to have a belt that adds a pop of color, or as in this image mom has texture/layer on her top.
Tip #4 Check out the weather forecast
Let’s be honest, sometimes the weather here in Minnesota is unpredictable. We can have 80 degree days in the middle of May and then in June it can be 57. BRRR!! Make sure you plan for both scenarios. I’m not saying purchase 2 different outfits for each member of your family, but maybe have a cute cardigan or jean or utility jacket to wear over your tops in case the date of your session turns out to be 57 and in the middle of June.
Tip #5 Think about your location as well
When styling your photos think about the location as well when you are choosing your outfits and accessories. Having beach pictures, make sure you’re dressed for the beach!! Also, proper foot wear – we will be walking, wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in a potentially walking up inclines.
Tip #6 What looks good in your home.
Choose clothing that will compliment the colors in your home so that you can display your photos proudly.
